BERBERA ANNUAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST PLASITC BAGS
YOVENCO held a workshop on 11th September 2003, It was about to focus
on the environmental problems due to plastic bags and the poor One of the important points raised in that workshop was to organize a day for campaigning against plastic bags once in every year for the town of Berbera in order it is not suspended there but community of Berbera keep feeling its negative impact on the environment. For that above reason the organization (YOVENCO) organized a campaign against plastic bags on 15th march 2003. Activities carried out. Prior march YOVENCO made a great awareness in which they issued boards, hand-outs to public and in the form of media like Jamhuuriya and Mandeeq news papers, this had done a vital role in getting the awareness in to affect and the community involvement in the implementation. In the early morning of 15 March 2003, YOVENCO with a large community of Berbera wearing t-shirts and holding slogans walked the streets of the town, cleaned and collected the plastic bags from the sea shore and the public areas of the town. That people were the community organizations like AL HANAAN women NGO which played a lion share in this campaign, SOVOYOMCO, Red crescent society, students and Local government employees whom the mayor of Berbera Mr. Abdala Mohamed Ali was leading who utterly supported YOVENCO in this campaign, the mayor provided us with the material like wheel borrows and the transport of rubbish was removed by the cars of BMA. In this campaign 1500 m of the Berbera coast was cleaned, the plastic bags all over the trees and the solid waste scattered all over the places were collected. YOVENCO dug a bit where was used to put the plastic bags inside and then burnt so as its disadvantages will not happen later. In the evening YOVENCO organized a fun ceremony which was an awareness to draw the attention of the community to the negative impact on the environment due to the daily consumed plastic. This fun show took place at the 26 June center of Berbera and this was including lectures suggested by Ali Jama Arale who was the vice chairperson of YOVENCO at that time, the regional coordinator of M.P.D.E and the executive secretary of BMA; Mr. Abdirashid (the Berbera Municipal Authority), these lectures were mainly focused on the problems of the plastic bags on the environment. Hence the problem is still apparent YOVENCO is planning to proceed such this activities, raising awareness and implementing strategies.
1. To promote the sanitation and clean the public areas of the town 2. To keep the community feeling about the negative impact on the environment due to the plastic bags and see some examples how far it exterminates the plants growing along the coast. |
